Rabobank Awards Funding for the Women’s Business Center

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Rabobank has awarded Mission Community Service Corp. $5,000 to go toward their Women’s Business Center programs. Funding will be allocated to their small business startup courses. These courses provide fundamental business knowledge, tools and resources for aspiring and continuing entrepreneurs looking to launch, purchase, and/or expand their business.

Additional funding will help the nonprofit continue to provide free business consultations to the public. For additional services provide by MCSC’s Women’s Business Center please visit mcscorp.org.

Congratulations Summer Graduates!

Last Wednesday June 21, 2017 the WBC graduated 15 dedicated entrepreneurs! What a celebration it was, with BBQ catering from graduate Lan Thompson, and sushi provided by alumnus Kumiko japanese restaurant, Rene Gonzalez, who graduated from our Spanish course earlier this year! Delicious lavender GMO free cake was also provided by Alumna Alexandra Steinicke the The GMO Free Baker!

During the ceremony each student courageously pitched their business to a panel of judges, colleagues, and guests. Congratulations to winners Brian Hampson and Katie Cascamo! Every student did a fabulous job pitching their business with such purpose and passion!

Bank of the Sierra Awarded $5,000 to MCSC's Women's Business Center

Mission Community Services Corporation’s Women’s Business Center is Awarded $5,000 to Improve the Quality of life of the Central California Region through its Educational and Mentorship Services.

San Luis Obispo - For the first time, Bank Of The Sierra has awarded Mission Community Services Corporation’s Women’s Business Center (MCSC/WBC) with a $5,000 grant. MCSC Staff, consultants and special guests were in attendance for this check presentation. This grant will assist in funding existing WBC programs offered in San Luis Obispo and Kern County. These programs include entrepreneurial training programs, monthly business workshops, and no-cost business consultations for potential and continuing entrepreneurs. In order to improve the quality of life for community families Bank Of The Sierra awards grants to organizations that focus in areas of community, education and park preservation.

This week, MCSC's Women's Business Center honored the "Start, Run & Grow Your Business" spring graduates. This class was filled with great diversity and passion. They havebeen the most engaged and collaborative group of students we have trained adding even more value to the experience and knowledge that will be retained!

Every year since 1963, the President of the United States has issued a proclamation announcing National Small Business Week, which recognizes the critical contributions of America's entrepreneurs and small business owners. As part of National Small Business Week, celebrated during the first week in May, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) takes the opportunity to highlight the impact of outstanding entrepreneurs and small business owners.

National Small Business Week is an opportunity to recognize, highlight, and celebrate the success of MCSC clients.  Nobody tells the story of our impact better than the clients we have worked with over the years. Please enjoy their journeys and learn from their experiences.

A special congratulations to MCSC client Cesar Sanchez of SPD Printing for winning Family-Owned Business of the Year! We are very excited by the work that is being done in Kern County and couldn't do any of it without our team there. "If knowledge is power, then the MCSC is a powerhouse for small business entrepreneurs. The non-profit offers consulting and learning programs to aide people in starting their business venture.

According the Bureau of Labor Statistics, small business that receive consulting have an 80% improved chance of being in business after 3 years than those that do not receive consulting.

In 2006, MCSC of San Luis Obispo joined the Women’s Business Center (WBC) national network to educate would be small business owners on the intricacies of starting and maintaining a business. In 2016 alone, the organization held 214 training events that had 2,834 attendees and totaled more than 7300 training hours. Through grants from the Small Business Association (SBA) and matching donations from community sponsors, MCSC has helped launch 165 businesses in the last 10 years and has brought an estimated $26.5 million to the Central Coast economy.

Their entrepreneur-training course entitled “Start, Run & Grow” is a 12-week course with three hour classes held once a week. There is also a Spanish equivalent of the course called “Empezando.” Apart from the classes and free consultations, MCSC also does monthly workshops that explore different venues to promote and fund current businesses. Scheduled for April 18, the next two-hour workshop will be about utilizing Instagram for a company’s digital presence. They also host monthly 1.5-hour sessions called Brown Bag Workshops, the upcoming one is called Freelancing Your Way to Freedom.

MSCS reports that the average of women starting business for SLO County is 1.4, just below the national average of 1.5. In the past 3 years 78% of their SLO clientele was female and 61% for Kern County."
